Retail Liquor Stores

Last updated May 2020

Ohio can be a tricky state when it comes to finding that life-changing bottle of bourbon you had on vacation. As a ‘controlled liquor’ state, the JobsOhio Beverage System (JOBS) controls what is available for wholesale and retail purchase. That means your favorite liquor store is free to offer anything they want on their shelves – provided is made available by the state. Unfair, we know. So we visited each one of the stores in this Buyer’s Guide to give you the lowdown on their respective specialties, pricing and selection. Cheers!

Arena District Wine & Spirits

492 Armstrong St

Arena District, Downtown

Tucked away in the Arena District, behind BBR and just off Front St is one of the city’s best kept booze secrets. The first thing they have going for them is the free parking lot attached to the store. When you first walk in the size of the store will surprise you with four long aisles and some super premium stuff behind the front counter. The staff is super-friendly and knowlegable which is an added bonus.Though the name may lead with the word “Wine”, this place is definitely built for liquor. An overall great selection with some hard to find stuff and boutique brands.

The verdict

This place has character and honestly one of the best all-around liquor selections in the city. But what we like most about Arena Wine & Spirits is hands-down their Tequila selection. This spirit is making giant strides as drinkers are discovering a whole new world of fine, barrel-aged, sipping tequilas that are smooth and a bang for the buck. Some of the top brands you’ll find here are Clase Azul Reposado, Casamigos Añejo, Qui Platinum Extra Anejo Tequila and Milagro Barrel Select Reserve Reposado. If you’re interested in some buying tips, ask for Bill – he knows his agave inside and out.
