Day of the Dead themed tacos coming soon to Cbus

Day of the Dead and tacos are about to meet in a new restaurant called Condado. The taco joint is set to open by the Michigan game at the end of this month, or possibly in early December. It is the brainchild of Joe Kahn who has owned restaurants in the Cleveland area and will take over the old Circus Bar space in the Short North. “I wanted to kind of go off on my own and the Short North is a great area and Columbus is a great area,” Kahn said. He’s hoping to test the waters in Columbus (notoriously known as a test market) to see if his Day of the Dead taco joint has what it takes to make it nationally. If the idea is successful, he said he will open another Columbus location and then go nationally from there.

The theme will be saturated through the entirety of the restaurant and Kahn found church pews to turn into banquettes along with skeletons and traditional Day of the Dead art to adorn the walls of his new restaurant. There will be margaritas galore (along with a top notch happy hour) and constant streams of fresh queso and guacamole. “Everything is just done from scratch daily which is really what made me popular back in Cleveland, so I am bringing that real fresh food,” he said. Nick Nostadt, long-time New York chef is returning to his Ohio roots to be the chef at Condado.

Plus, there will be late night tacos. It’s hard to beat 2 a.m. tacos.

Cleveland restaurateur leaving for Cbus

Saturday, Whiskey Dogg closed for good in Cleveland because the owner is ready to head for Columbus. The owner, Joe Kahn, also owned Barrio taco in Tremont and Lakewood, and his plan is to expand his taco joints to Columbus. “I loved the Whiskey Dogg concept, but I couldn’t pass up this opportunity in Columbus,” he said according to Cleveland Scene Weekly. He plans to have the taco joint open in the Short North by the fall under a different name, but the same concept as his other shops. “We really love that market — it’s hopping down there,” Kahn said of the Short North.
