*UPDATE* 6 homes deemed unsafe after UA home explosion

Update: After an inspection from the city’s Chief Building Official, six homes in the area of the home explosion have been deemed uninhabitable; while 18 additional homes were deemed safe, due to minor damage. Also, electricity was disconnected from eight homes (including the six deemed unsafe) but will be turned back on once a certified electrician inspects them. In a helping hand gesture, the city has arranged for a debris collector to come (at no cost to homeowners) on their normally scheduled March 25th collection.

Anyone with damage related to the explosion, is advised to contact the Building Division at 614-583-5070. And those wanting to help affected families can contact Norm Hoffman, with the Red Cross, at 614-253-2740 ext. 2243. (deb)

Home explosion in Upper Arlington

Many are still amazed that no one was injured in Saturday’s house explosion in Upper Arlington. (The home’s residents were in Japan at the time of the blast.) And while the investigation into the gas explosion is ongoing, Columbia Gas has established a hotline for displaced residents: 1-800-590-5571. (deb)

Reports say that no one was at home when a house on Sunningdale Way in Upper Arlington exploded Saturday afternoon. A Columbia Gas employee was on-site investigating reports of a possible gas leak, but the worker was not injured. At least half-a-dozen other homes in the neighborhood suffered some sort of damage in the explosion that was reportedly felt as far away as Clintonville and the OSU campus.

A number of rescue workers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. An investigation in to the exact cause of Saturday’s explosion is just beginning.  (jj)
