Jeni’s hires Food Safety Director following listeria outbreak

Following last year’s outbreak of listeria in Jeni’s Ice Cream and the subsequent “voluntary recall” of all Jeni’s products, the Columbus-born ice cream parlor has hired a Food Safety Director.

Cynthia Decker, Ph.D., has over 20 years experience in food safety and quality monitoring programs, in addition to microbiology experience with Ross Laboratories and Scotts Miracle-Gro, according to a blog post written by Jeni’s founder Jeni Britton Bauer.

The post calls Decker “a balls-to-the-wall, no nonsense Listeria/microbe/pathogen hunter.”

“Part of a really tight safety program is looking for microbes where they hide,” Britton Bauer writes. “We’re going to find microbes because earth is full of them. And we use ingredients from earth first. That’s pretty rare in the ice cream business.”
