City employees see decade-high health costs

Health insurance costs for Columbus city workers are seeing the largest yearly increase in almost ten years, increasing 11.5 percent this year.

Health care costs have risen 65.5 percent since 2010 and is the item with the fastest growth on the city’s budget. And it continues to climb regardless of the fact that the city has nearly the same number of employees this year as the beginning of 2015.

The cost increase is said to be caused mostly by the $10 million increase in medical insurance coverage. The city estimates it will shell out more than $123 million in 2016 for hospital and doctor visits.
