General Mills expands flour recall after four illnesses

614now Staff

It was announced today that General Mills is expanding its previous 10 million pound flour recall originally issued on May 31 after four more illnesses were reported.

The recall covers additional varieties of Gold Medal and Signature Kitchens flours, a full list of which can be found here.

According to General Mills’ website, the illnesses are connected with consumers reporting that they ate or handled uncooked dough or ate uncooked batter made with raw flour. No illnesses have been connected with flour that has been properly baked, cooked or handled.

In a press release the flour producer writes, “At this time, it is unknown if we are experiencing a higher prevalence of E.coli in flour than normal, if this is an issue isolated to General Mills’ flour, or if this is an issue across the flour industry.”

Since the recall has been issued, 46 illnesses have been reported in 23 states.

6/1/16: General Mills’ 10 million pound flour recall

An outbreak of E. Coli spurred General Mills to recall 10 million pounds of flour, including its signature Gold Medal flour and flour sold under the Wondra and Signature Kitchen brands.

As of now, the contaminated flour has sickened 38 people in 20 states. There have been 10 hospitalizations associated with the outbreak, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.

The CDC has not released the names of the states affected by the recall.

Despite the illnesses, General Mills says it has not found E. Coli at any of its facilities or in any of its products, and is issuing the recall due to “an abundance of caution.”
