OSU Med Center develops novel test for pregnancy disorder
Researchers at the OSU Wexner Medical Center have found a new way to test for preeclampsia, a pregnancy disorder with no known cause that affects about 1 in 20 births in the U.S.
Previously, testing for preeclampsia was a long and exhausting process for expectant mothers, whereas the new test developed here in Columbus can be performed in minutes and is 86 percent accurate.
The condition causes uncomfortable symptoms for mothers, including severe headaches, and premature births.
However, the only cure for preeclampsia is delivery, so ruling it out is just as important as diagnosing it. An early delivery is sometimes the only option if the mother is in danger.
