Columbus named finalist for $50 Million ‘Smart City’ grant

As Columbus ponders implementing light rail transportation across the city and new COTA apps with real-time bus tracking, both of these ideas and even wilder possibilities could soon become a reality thanks to a new “Smart City” grant issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The Capital City beat out 71 other cities to be named one of seven finalists competing for $50 million that would go towards forward-thinking solutions to transportation problems.

Part of the city’s application included funding driverless vehicles at Easton that could shuttle shoppers to nearby businesses.

With population growth on the rise, landing a grant this huge would be a boon to Columbus’ transportation infrastructure.
