Columbus’ marriage equality resolution is a milestone for the state

The Columbus City Council (during their last 2014 meeting) passed a resolution Monday night supporting marriage equality in Ohio, making it the first city in Ohio to do so. The resolution also honors the work of a grassroots public education campaign, Why Marriage Matters, that builds support for marriage equality in Ohio.

35 states allow same-sex marriage, but Ohio is not one of them. The US Supreme Court will consider petitions to hear the cases challenging Ohio’s constitutional ban on marriage equality starting in Jan. 2015.

“We promote ourselves and sell ourselves as being smart and open,” said Andrew Ginther, Columbus City Council President (and mayoral candidate). “We want to make sure that everyone feels welcomed in this community represents everything that our great values of the city represents.”
