Gov. Kasich subpoenaed, state fighting back
GOP donor Benjamin Suarez is building a defense against the allegations that he had illegally been funneling money (about $200,000) toward two Republican candidates in 2012. Part of building that defense: subpoenaing Governor Kasich. The motion, intended to be “persuasive,” according to the Dispatch, has the state arguing the governor has nothing to do with the case, nor has received donations from Suarez since 2011 (before he was even governor). According the the Dispatch report, the court filing said Governor Kasich was subpoenaed so he could “testify that constituents frequently reach out to public offices (such as the governor’s office) and to offer his lay opinion that there is nothing improper about a constituent doing so.”
