Steamy affair loses lawyer his license
While taking a woman on dinner dates, drives through the country and a getaway trip to a Buckeye Lake cabin generally might not sound all too bad, it is when that woman is the wife of the man you are defending in court. A Columbus lawyer has lost his license for a year because of an affair he had with his client’s wife, during the man’s death-penalty trial in 1997. The attorney, James Owen, even had sex with the woman the night her husband, Robert Caulley, was convicted. “The sexual relationship intrudes into the marriage, subjects the client to a double betrayal by the spouse and by the lawyer, destroys the trust essential to the attorney-client relationship … and undermines the lawyer’s loyalty to the client,” read a court opinion, according to the Dispatch.
