CBJ’s Jack Johnson files bankruptcy
Just days before the season started this year, star Columbus Blue Jackets player Jack Johnson filed for bankruptcy, according to the Dispatch. Since he turned pro, his parents have apparently been taking out loans in his name and then defaulting on those loans to the tune of $15 million. According to the report, Johnson’s parents took out loans against his future payment and his current assets sit at less than $50,000. It appears that Johnson had no idea his parents were taking out such hefty loans and monetizing his salary. Those close to Johnson have said that while he will bounce back financially, the relationship he had with his family might never be the same, the Dispatch reported. The report also stated it’s not uncommon for family members to use the salary of the pro player and several NHL athletes have fallen into similar loans as Johnson’s parents.
The team would not comment on the situation, but said they would stand by Johnson.
