CCS: Revamping special needs education

For many Columbus schools, teachers abided by an unspoken code that a special education student would not be given a F, and in doing so, some teachers awarded students with Ds that hadn’t always been earned. Columbus City Schools has now promised a complete turn around on the practice and a different teaching method for teaching students with learning differences. Any special education student who was given a D will have the option to retake the courses, on the district’s dime, beginning Monday, to make sure that the students were really learning and understood the materials. Some of the problems being fixed within Columbus City Schools includes making sure any student who needs special services gets them, schools will give parents reports on their students progress and making academic goals more clear.
