Downtown gets sanctimonious after new development project

The developer for the Normandy apartments along East Long St. opened their doors for a look inside the former Welsh Presbyterian Church (315 E Long St.) that is serving as the new community center for the project. After getting some state historic tax credits, the 1888 church underwent a $17.7 million renovation. The building has the original wood beams above the leasing office for the apartments just west of the church, while the sales office for the nearby Neighborhood Launch condos is on the second floor above the leasing office in a space that used to be part of the choir loft.

One of the highlights of the building is a collection of wooden organ pipes that have been refashioned as a wall sculpture. Aside from the architectural gems of the renovated building, it also boosts an outdoor pool, movie/party room, fitness center and two private apartments that were built in the 1940’s addition to the church. With all the new construction taking place over the city, its nice to see some developers upcycling the city’s iconic buildings.
