Have no fear, your package will be protected from parcel pirates this year
After Columbus’ Tera McIntosh had her packages stolen two years ago, she says she now keeps an eye on her neighborhood through an app called Nextdoor.
A private chat room lets users alert people who live next door about crimes or any suspicious activity. The chats rooms are especially abuzz during the holidays with alerts on thieves who steal packages, known as “parcel pirates”. These parcel pirates drive around neighborhoods looking for unattended packages and will even follow delivery trucks. According to Nextdoor, 250 neighborhoods in Columbus are using their service.
McIntosh said one of neighbors had a package stolen and she would never have known if not for a Nextdoor alert she get on her cell. The alert read:
By the time I got home in the evening, the package was gone. Luckily, it was only a $15 box of vitamins, but beware about unsecured deliveries.
This weekend marks the last before Christmas and with many people hoping for deliveries, it’s a good idea to keep a watchful eye. Because you really shouldn’t be up all night worrying about a missing package, when you’ll probably be arguing about how to put Jr.’s bike together and why there’s always an allen wrench in the box.
Some Package Safety Tips:
- Track your packages
- Be available for delivery
- Request a signature
- Personalize delivery
- Use your credit card
- Insure valuable items
- Be aware of fake package delivery emails claiming there’s an issue with your purchase
