Information released on Ohio prison escape
When three inmates escaped from prison in Lima, it prompted a major investigation into how they were able to get out. In a report released, the inmates fashioned a ladder over a period of several months within a maintenance access area kind of like a crawl space that was about 38 inches tall at its highest point. They went over the fence in an area where the security camera did not work because of a previous lightning strike. The prison themselves investigated while also requesting an independent one to be done by the Association of State Correctional Administrators.
Between both of the reviews it was found that there were issues in the key and lock control, security features, inmate access to restricted areas and overall leadership and mission. The escaped inmates were taken to Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown, the state’s highest security facility, after being re-captured.
