*UPDATE* Cardale Jones makes his announcement

614now Staff

In a press conference held today in his hometown of Cleveland, Buckeye quarterback Cardale Jones announced his intention to stay at Ohio State.  Cardale giving the word in an event held in the gymnasium of the Ginn Academy where he attended high school.  He entered the room to Drake’s “Started from the Bottom,” surrounded by friends, family and local government officials.  Then, he took the podium:

“I’m going to return next year for school.”

Cardale emphasized the importance to him of graduating and said that he didn’t understand what all the fuss was about.  “A first round draft pick means nothing to me without my education.”

Buckeye players are always stars in the city of Columbus.  And no one in recent memory has turned into a superstar faster than quarterback Cardale Jones.  The third-string player moved into the starter’s role after injuries took Braxton Miller and later J.T. Barrett.  And now with just three starts under his own belt, his resume boasts leading the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title, a Sugar Bowl win and a national championship.  And now the man who helped a team to defy national expectations is being looked to once again.  What will Cardale do?

The man has options.  Reports say that he’s asked coach Urban Meyer, if he stays, will he be the starter next season…or will he return to the bench. We don’t know about Urban’s response, but if he told Cardale that he would be taking a seat, presumably that would assure that the quarterback would try his luck in the NFL draft. But no matter what Urban said, many expect that to be the route that Cardale Jones will take.  Analysts says that even a third-round QB pick in this year’s draft could be looking at $1 million in terms of guaranteed salary.  That’s a lot of money for anyone, and especially for a sophomore that never expected that he would be stepping foot on the field this season outside of practice.

We’ve seen this guy make good, solid decisions on the field in the last several week.  Now he’s ready to make a choice outside of the field of play.  And once again…it will be fun and exciting to watch.  (jj)
