Feds: “Urban Meyer” belongs to Ohio State
Ohio State has every right to market, sell and profit from the name “Urban Meyer.” The coach is good with that…and now, so if the federal government.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has approved the university’s application for trademark registration on the football coach’s name. Urban Meyer has been appearing on OSU-licensed gear and apparel for years with permission from the man himself. But now with the Patent and Trademark Office making it official, the university has more rights to protect the name and its use.
This isn’t the first time that Ohio State has sought to trademark the name of a coach. Current men’s basketball coach Thad Matta’s name is protected as was former football coach Jim Tressel’s.
Coaches earn a percentage of merchandise sales when their name is used in such a way. Meyer gives his proceeds to charity. (jj)
