ResponsibleOhio submits “last chance” signatures
ResponsibleOhio promised supporters that they would deliver many more than the nearly 30,000 additional signatures needed to secure their spot on the November ballot by Thursday night’s midnight deadline. In the end, the group…using boxes labeled “last chance”…says that they turned in 95,572 to the Secretary of State’s office. The question now is just how many of those signatures will be counted as valid.
The group turned in nearly 700,000 signatures at the end of June, but most were considered invalid. ResponsibleOhio was given ten days to make up the difference. Many signatures the first time around were not counted because they were from unregistered voters or voters who were not registered at their current address. The organization says that they planned for that this time around…submitting tens of thousands of voter registrations with this second batch of signatures to try to prevent that problem from happening again. It’s deadline day for ResponsibleOhio. The marijuana legalization effort has until 11:59pm tonight to submit a minimum of 29,509 valid signatures to the Ohio Secretary of State’s office to have their measure qualify for this November’s ballot.

Signatures were discounted due to incomplete info in some cases. In others, the signer was not a registered voter. (ResponsibleOhio says that they had actually submitted more signatures than officials say that they did and have announced plans to take the matter to court. In response, Secretary of State John Husted has announced an investigation into possible election fraud charges against the group.)
In the meantime, ResponsibleOhio was given ten days to make up the difference in valid signatures. Today is day ten. They say that people will be surprised with how many signatures they submit by the deadline. (jj)
