Ohio Sports Weekend Recap: Crew SC playoff bound, CBJ sit in the cellar
The Columbus Crew SC punches a playoff ticket. The Buckeyes’ winning streak continues. And the Jackets…ugh. Let’s check out the weekend results.
Columbus Crew SC
In Toronto on Saturday, Ethan Finlay and Federico Higuain scored for Columbus Crew SC to lead the club to a 2 – 0 win. Columbus takes the Trillium Cup and secures a spot in the MLS Playoffs.
Ohio State Buckeyes
In Saturday’s game vs Penn State, Buckeye fans once again saw head coach Urban Meyer going with a two QB strategy…using Cardale Jones effective passing to get the ball downfield, then switching to J.T. Barrett to move the ball the rest of the way. In the first half, the plan worked…until it didn’t. When Cardale began to struggle a bit, the coach turned to Barrett to completely take over the rest of the way. In the end, a pair of touchdown runs for J.T.,a pair of scoring passes from J.T. (one each to Braxton Miller and Michael Thomas), a rushing TD for Ezekiel Elliott and a field goal added up to a 38 – 10 win over the Nittany Lions. The Buckeyes hold on to the top spot in the AP Top 25. Here’s a look at the top five:
- Ohio State
- Baylor
- Utah
- TCU
- LSU
And one quick note about Michigan’s loss on Saturday: LOLOLOLOLOL
Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals traveled to New York on Sunday for a match-up with the Bills. Buffalo was on the board first, but Cincy took over in the second quarter and never looked back. Cincinnati wins this one, 34 – 21 improving their record to 6 – 0. The Bengals sit in first place in the AFC North, two games ahead of Pittsburgh.
Cleveland Browns
Watching Sunday’s Browns / Broncos game, I was ready to eat crow for doubting their chances against Peyton Manning and the boys from Denver. Cleveland was looking good in this one and held their own until…Browns. Cleveland’s late field goal pushed this one to overtime. A Denver field goal in OT handed them the victory, 26 – 23. The Browns fall to 2 – 4.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Sparing you the sad details, I’ll just tell you that the Blue Jackets lost to Toronto Friday night, 6 – 3, and to Chicago Saturday night, 4 – 1. The CBJ now has six straight losses to begin the season and are the only team in the NHL yet to record a point in the standings.
