Recap: Buckeyes dominate in season opener
In a week where Urban Meyer told us that he would make a secret decision on his starting quarterback and share the info with only the two candidates for the job, and in a week where one of those candidates was rushed, late at night, to the hospital emergency room, and in a week where Ohio State was scheduled to play Virginia Tech, the only team to beat Meyer’s boys last season…the Buckeyes did what they were expected to do.
They won.
The #1 ranked Buckeyes defeated the Hokies of Virginia Tech in lopsided fashion Monday night.
The night’s drama began with the game’s coin toss (won by Ohio State). The Buckeyes deferred and the Virginia Tech offense took the field first, forcing Buckeye fans to wait just a little longer to learn Meyer’s QB decision. And when OSU’s offense eventually took the field, it was Cardale Jones in the huddle.
Ohio State was first on the board courtesy of a first quarter strike from Jones, a 24-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Samuel. Minutes later, Ezekiel Elliott ran the ball 80 yards for a score.
The second quarter belonged to Virginia Tech with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal. The Buckeyes trailed at the half, 17 – 14.
Braxton Miller was the star of the third quarter. Making his debut as a receiver, Miller caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from Cardale Jones and later scored on a 53-yard run.
The fourth quarter saw Jones find the end zone on his own with a 10-yard run.
With the Buckeyes leading by 18 points, Cardale Jones headed for the sidelines and J.T. Barrett stepped in as quarterback. He connected with Michael Thomas on a 24-yard touchdown pass.
The Hokies would score once more on a touchdown throw in the closing minutes of the game, but it was already over.
Ohio State 42, Virginia Tech 24

The Hokies got a close-up look at many of the Buckeye stars Monday night…Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, J.T. Barrett, Ezekiel Elliott and more. Urban Meyer’s team demonstrated to Virginia Tech that it’s true what they say about paybacks.
Ohio State’s home opener is this Saturday in the Horseshoe….a 3:30pm kick for the game vs Hawaii. (jj)
