We’re talking attendance here, people. Maybe it was the dime-a-dog nights. Maybe it was special appearances by the likes of the WWE’s Booker T or Saved by the Bell’s Mr. Belding. Maybe it was the play of a team that finished the regular season in first place with an 83 – 61 record. Likely, it was a combination of all of the above and more that led Columbus to a top 5 finish in Baseball Digest’s survey of minor league ballpark attendance.

Mark Galuska is the Director of Marketing and Sales for the Clippers. He tells me that the park has a great reputation as the winner time and again of Ballpark of the Year honors. “People appreciate the park because it’s gorgeous and fans just enjoy it,” he says. Mark says that, aside from the always well-attended Dime-a-Dog nights, one of Huntington Park’s most popular promotions is Star Wars Night. It’s a night where fans from galaxies near and far, far away come to the game dressed as their favorite characters and have the opportunity to have their pictures taken with wookies and other characters from the Star Wars universe.

Here’s a look at the top five minor league baseball teams in terms of regular season attendance.

  1. Sacramento River Cats (672,354)
  2. Charlotte Knights (669,398)
  3. Indianapolis Indians (662,536)
  4. Columbus Clippers (662,096)
  5. Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (613,815)

The Clippers begin post-season play Wednesday night on the road in Norfolk. The next home game is Friday night.  (jj)
