Sherwood is first Columbus native to sign with the Blue Jackets

With all due apologies to the people of Boston…we’re keeping Kole Sherwood.

The 18 year-old Columbus native was on track to play hockey at Boston University, but plans changed when he signed a contract this week with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 3-year entry level deal makes Sherwood the first Cbus-born player to sign with the CBJ and the first player to sign an NHL deal coming directly out of the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets program.

Kole was considered a possibility to be picked up by a club in the recent NHL draft. Some scouts were very high on his prospects. But when the draft was over, Sherwood remained unselected. The Blue Jackets invited Kole (and his talented brother Kiefer) to the team’s development camp. The club was impressed and it wasn’t long before contract negotiations began with Kole’s agent…leading to this week’s signing.

The next stop for Kole is a roster spot with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. If things go well there in the coming season, and he continues to impress, it may not be long before we see him on ice at Nationwide Arena…the hometown kid playing in front of the hometown fans in the NHL, the biggest hockey stage in the world.  (jj)
