Hilliard comic book store honored at San Diego Comic-Con
Congrats are in order for the fine folks over at Packrat Comics in Hilliard (3864 Lattimer Street). The store was named the winner of the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award at the recent San Diego Comic-Con. The award goes to the comic book shop that is most viewed as having done “an outstanding job of supporting the comics medium both in the industry at large and in their local community.” In taking the honor, Packrat beat out other nominees from all around the world.
Jamie Colegrove, a hometown resident of Hilliard, opened Packrat in 1993 with the goal of creating a fun family environment centered around his love of comics. The store offers up a solid selection of comics (new and old), graphic novels, t-shirts, action figures, statues and other related merchandise. And the shop is a growing enterprise having opened a Marysville location in 2014 (run by son Bobby). The Colegroves hope to open additional stores in the Central Ohio area, but no plans have been set just yet.
In the meantime, Packrat continues to be an active part of the community. A recent event filled the Hilliard shop with gamers for a day fun with food provided on-the-house.
It’s clear by their success that the local comic book community has embraced Jamie and his shop. And now, in an industry that so often tells tales of good vs evil, the community at large is viewing Jamie as a hero of sorts as well. (jj)
