Staging opposition: OSU challenges casinos over use of “the Shoe”
Ask anyone in Columbus where “the Shoe” is and they’ll tell you that it’s on the campus of Ohio State University. Ask representatives for the Horseshoe Casino in Cincinnati, and they may tell you something different.
Caesars Entertainment filed paperwork to trademark use of the term “the Shoe” in 2013 with plans to rebrand the entertainment venue for their Cincy gaming site. Ohio State is now challenging that move. Business First reports that Ohio State says that they have staged major concerts over the years in a venue nicknamed “the Shoe” and if someone else were to use that name, it might appear that they had the backing of the university.
In its, filing Ohio State cites a Wikipedia article that reference Ohio Stadium as being called “the Shoe” as far back as 1988.
(Let’s stop here for a second. I completely get what Ohio State is saying. But…really? You’re using a Wikipedia page as evidence in a legal matter? Really?)
Caesars has sold its stake in its Ohio casinos to Rock Gaming LLC. They have until next month to respond to Ohio State’s objection. (jj)
