Update: As expected, Columbus City Council passed on Monday a measure requiring hotels, motels and other such businesses to obtain annual operating permits to remain in business. Those establishments could lose their permits if the city finds regular occurrences of criminal behavior at those locations.  (jj)

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Columbus City Council will vote today on a plan designed to clear out hotels and motels that are known to be centers of criminal activity.

Under the proposal, hotel, motels, bed-and-breakfasts and extended-stay offerings would need to seek annual permits. When up for review, those permits could be denied if the business has developed a history of housing crime.

If they really want to examine crime in hotels, they should look at the prices on items in the mini-fridge. $3.50 for a 12-ounce can of Coke? Criminal!  (jj)
