Buckle up for safety
There’s a new bill riding around the Ohio legislature. Sen Shannon Jones (R), backed by the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, introduced a bill yesterday that would require children 16-years-old and younger to wear a helmet when riding a bike. The push comes from statistics that show the disparity between kids riding bikes versus actually wearing a helmet (20% v 70%).
And while some Ohio areas (like Columbus) have bike helmet safety laws in place, Jones wants it to be a statewide regulation. And while that would mean police officers could pull kids aside that aren’t wearing them, the goal is for the law to bring about positive change and bike safety education. So click it or ticket it. Wait, that’s a different safety regulation motto… (deb)
