Columbus honors Pres. Lincoln
Columbus is honoring President Lincoln today, with a commemorative viewing of his “body.” 150 years ago, Lincoln’s funeral train pulled into Columbus and the president’s body was displayed in the Statehouse Rotunda for mourners to pay their respects. The Statehouse has been working at making the building and events just like those that took place in 1865. Several exhibits are being displayed throughout the Statehouse, but today there’ll be a series of events echoing those from 150 years ago.
- Canon firings every half hour
- In the Rotunda: Replica casket on display
- Public is invited to place fresh flowers
- Honor Guard will watch over the casket
- Civil War re-enactors, the 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A
- “Taps” (written during the Civil War), will be played by Bugles Across America
- Kelton House members will be in period costume
- Civil War Encampment on the Statehouse West Plaza
April 29th, 6PM
- Lincoln presentation by re-enactor Fritz Klein
- Ohio House of Representatives
April 30th, 12PM
- Lincoln funeral discussion in the Atrium
- Talk led by Scott Trostel author of The Lincoln Funeral Train: The Final Journey and National Funeral for Abraham Lincoln
May 1st, 12PM
- In the Atrium: Lincoln on screen, portrayals of Lincoln in the movies and on television, by Mark Reinhart

Today is the anniversary of the death of President Abraham Lincoln. This year, on the 150th anniversary, several states will be paying their historic respects – and Ohio is one of the those states.
Starting next week, there will be a commemorative tour following the path of Lincoln’s funeral train. You’ve probably seen the black ribbon wrapping around the columns at the Statehouse; this was done to make the Statehouse look like it did on April 29, 1865 when Lincoln’s body arrived in Columbus for his memorial. It’s all part of a series of events to honor the late president. You’ll be able to go to the Statehouse on April 29th and mourn the president just as those in 1865 did (like bringing fresh flowers and leaving them in the Rotunda). A small collection of memorabilia will also be on display starting April 26th, outside Gov. Kasich’s office.
The funeral train tour will visit in 15 cities from April 18th to May 3rd, stopping in Columbus on April 29th. (deb)
