Council approves $74 million for new city building

Columbus City Council unanimously voted on Monday to approve the spending of $74 million for construction of a new downtown building for city offices. The 8-story project will be the eventual home of offices for the Public Service, Utilities and Development Departments. The building will go up at 111 North Front Street near City Hall. The contract also includes a new parking garage at 141 North Front…mostly for city workers but with a limited number of spaces for public parking as well. Construction for both the new city building and the new parking garage is expected to be finished in mid-2017.

Many of the offices that will be relocated to the new building are currently housed at 50 West Gay Street. That building will likely be sold and turned into housing.  (jj)
