Update: FDA releases report on Jeni’s

While Columbus is getting ready to scoop up ice cream tonight during Jeni’s reopening, there are still some wondering what that FDA report was all about. The FDA released a report this week citing that the ice cream makers had inadequate testing and cleaning at their Columbus plant; factors that (can) help Listeria grow. The FDA further detailed that managers had an inadequate sampling and testing program and weren’t thoroughly sanitizing surfaces, like the floors. The report also said residue was found on equipment.

But, according to Jeni’s CEO John Lowe, all those problems have been fixed. The report was filed on April 30th and by May 11th, those issues had been remedied. Jeni Britton Bauer also said that while the FDA reported the problems, they gave no recommendations when they filed in 2013-14.

Jeni’s underwent a MASSIVE cleaning and restructuring process following the recall that will make sure sanitation and cleanliness issues never come up again. (deb)

FDA releases report on Jeni’s dirty kitchen

The FDA has released its report on Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. The company closed its shops and issued a voluntary recall of all of its products last month following a positive test for the bacteria listeria. (No illnesses were reported.) Jeni’s later said that the source of the listeria was found to be a spout in their production kitchen on a machine used to fill pints with ice cream.

A report just released from the FDA gives more information on just what was going on at Jeni’s. Investigators say that building upkeep and product handling were significant problems. In production facilities, a number of employees failed to sanitize food contact surfaces. Floors were not adequately cleaned. There was also no finished-product testing program at the facility.

The FDA also released a 2008 report on Jeni’s that showed issues with rodents and with employee cleanliness.

Jeni’s reports that they have since rehabbed production facilities and overhauled employee policies. They say that they have corrected every issue identified by the FDA. The ice cream shops are scheduled to reopen this Friday.  (jj)
