Kasich pulls rights from home care workers

Ohio Governor John Kasich on Friday lived up to a 2010 campaign promise…much to the dismay of many home healthcare and home childcare workers. The governor (and potential 2016 presidential candidate) issued an executive order rescinding an order from former Governor Ted Strickland that allowed those workers the right to collective bargaining with the state. Kasich’s position is that, with so many more options for health insurance available today, the collective bargaining rights for those people are unnecessary. A statement from the Service Employees International Union characterizes the governor’s action this way:

“By stripping collective bargaining rights from home care and childcare workers, Kasich is effectively attempting to silence thousands of low-wage workers, women and people of color from their ability to advocate for their clients and preserve quality care and services to the children, seniors and people with disabilities in our communities.”
