Screen Shot 2015-09-22 at 10.36.32 AMDemocrat Fran Ryan first served on Columbus City Council nearly 45 years ago. She exited the chamber 38 years ago. And now…she’s back.

Ryan has been appointed to complete the term of Michelle Mills who resigned from council last month. The former / incoming councilwoman will hold the office until January 1st of 2016 when the winners of this year’s general election will be sworn in. (Elizabeth Brown has taken Mills’ spot on the November ballot.)

Since leaving Columbus City Council all those years ago, Ryan has kept herself quite busy. She served for a time in the U.S Department of Labor under former President Jimmy Carter. Among other posts, she served a long stretch as the head of the Franklin County Board of Elections and for 15 years she sold cars at Byers Chevrolet.

Ryan tells the Columbus Dispatch that she hopes to use her return to Columbus City Council, as abbreviated as it may be, to be a voice for the city’s senior population.

I would hope that being 81 that I can speak for a lot of the seniors in the community and inspire them to keep at it.

– Fran Ryan to the Columbus Dispatch
