Funding to expire: Zoo eyes return to voters

Funding to expire: Zoo eyes return to voters

The last time the Columbus Zoo went to the voters with a proposed levy, they were disappointed with the result. That was May of last year and the zoo was seeking to make their funding permanent, but they also wanted money for a new downtown branch. Franklin County voters balked at that idea and voted the levy down with 70% saying ‘no.’

The idea of the satellite zoo having been scrapped, the zoo appears ready to return to the voters. This time around, the issue would be a 10-year renewal levy, a simple replacement of current funding that is set to expire at the end of this year. The zoo’s board will meet Wednesday and likely will decide that’s the route that they want to take. It will then be up to the Franklin County commissioners to give the final go-ahead to place the issue on this November’s ballot.

*Taxpayers make up approximately 15% of the zoo’s funding. The rest comes from money collected at the gate, memberships sold, concession sales and other in-house sources. (jj)
