A bill to make permanent a bill to provide healthcare and compensation to 9/11 responders was one vote short of having enough support to make its way through the U.S. Senate on Thursday. Among those not supporting it…Ohio Senator Rob Portman (R).
Portman said that he approved of the measure, but couldn’t vote for it for fiscal reasons. He’s since changed his mind and become the needed 67th vote to move the bill forward. His support came after a hallway meeting Thursday afternoon with a group of responders, a dying firefighter and former Daily Show host Jon Stewart.
