Aramark’s prison-food maggots back on the menu

State officials “have signaled” their intent to renew Aramark’s contract. In 2013, Aramark took over prison food service after the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections decided to privatize the work to save money. The contract won’t be up for official renewal until April 1 and the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association has formed a union food service committee to develop a competing bid.

It’ll be interesting to see who the state actually chooses, especially since Aramark got so much negative press this past year: reports of staffing shortages, employees smuggling contraband for inmates, and maggots in food. If the state does choose Aramark, I wonder what category maggots fall under in the food pyramid? (deb)

Maggots in prison food a major problem

New reports are showing that maggots in the food were not the only issue with the food vendor in Ohio prisons. According to an AP report, there were 65 instances when the company either did not provide food or ran out before all inmates were fed, although generally a substitute was provided. Aramark, the company in charge of feeding the inmates, was also accused of not showing up at all on occasions along with five reports of maggots since January, according to the report.
