Poll: Kasich beats Hillary in Buckeye state

Poll: Kasich beats Hillary in Buckeye state

With Hillary Clinton viewed as the favorite to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016, Republican voters are asking themselves which of their candidates could defeat her. No Republican has ever won the presidency without carrying Ohio, so one of the larger questions for the party concerns who could beat the former Secretary of State here.

A new Quinnipiac poll shows that Governor John Kasich, if the election were held today, would be the only candidate able to beat Hillary in the Buckeye state (47% to 40%). Kentucky Senator Rand Paul comes next closest, polling in a 43% – 43% tie with Clinton.

Looking at other key swing states, Clinton tops Kasich in Pennsylvania (45% to 39%) and in Florida (48% to 35%).

How other Republican candidates fared in the poll vs Hillary Clinton:

  • Hillary Clinton 44%, Chris Christie 39%
  • Hillary Clinton 46%, Mike Huckabee 41%
  • Hillary Clinton 42%, Jeb Bush 41%
  • Hillary Clinton 45%, Marco Rubio 42%
  • Hillary Clinton 44%, Scott Walker 40%
  • Hillary Clinton 47%, Ted Cruz 39%

*Of note: In Pennsylvania, Marco Rubio and Rand Paul both edge Hillary Clinton in the polling. Clinton defeats Kasich 45% to 39%. (Kasich is from Pennsylvania.)

Previous: Kasich visits Michigan ahead of decision 6/16/15

This week has seen the addition of two more candidates to the crowded field of Republicans running for president. Former Florida governor Jeb Bush made his announcement on Monday and billionaire Donald Trump (seriously) entered the race on Tuesday. And as all of this is going on, Ohio’s governor John Kasich continues to play the part of a man about to launch a campaign of his own. The day took Kasich to Michigan where he met with a group of small business owners in Lansing before heading to an expected meeting with that state’s governor Rick Snyder. The possible contender sounded like a man who plans to run for the nation’s top job and hopes to do well in the state up north.

“…for those that like me or don’t like me, you’re going to see a lot of me in Michigan. I consider Michigan to be a critical state.”

– Governor John Kasich

Trump’s entry today makes 12 announced candidates in the race for the Republican nomination. Four governors are expected to announce their candidacies soon including Kasich (with Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Chris Christie of New Jersey).  (jj)

Previous: Kasich polls in the top 10 5/29/15

Kasich’s “running for President…probably,” is looking better. A recent poll from Quinnipiac has the Governor tied for 10th place among the Republican candidates. Which is probably good, considering this election could see about 20 Republicans for top office.

  • 10%: former FL Gov. Jeb Bush
  • 10%: Ben Carson
  • 10%: former AR Gov. Mike Huckabee
  • 10%: US Sen. Marco Rubio (FL)
  • 10%: WI Gov. Scott Walker
  • 7%: Sen. Rand Paul
  • 6%: Sen. Ted Cruz
  • 5%: Donald Trump
  • 4:%: NJ Gov. Chris Christie
  • 2%: OH Gov. Kasich
  • 2%: Carly Fiorina

And while these numbers look good, it’s probably best to keep in mind that Kasich, along with Busch, Walker, Trump, and Christie, have yet to officially announce they’re running for office. But that won’t stop me from using the CNN Kasich emoji.
