Refugee rejection, Kasich just says ‘no’ to displaced Syrians

12241602_10153081881165933_5802389340715927459_nGovernor John Kasich has written to President Obama asking that the U.S. not accept any additional Syrian refugees until background checks are improved.

Kasich’s position, one becoming increasingly popular especially among Republican governors, is that unchecked refugees pose a potential security threat. (It’s believed that at least one of the men involved in last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris made his way into France with a group of refugees from Syria.)

From Kasich’s letter:

I empathize with the plight of Syrians who are running from violent conditions and civil war. However, I am not confident in the process and procedures for adequately investigating security threats posed by potential refugees who may be resettled in the United States, specifically Ohio, and as governor it is my duty to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of my state. Until the rigor and depth of background checks are improved and their results are more transparently shared with states, I urge the federal government not to accept more Syrian refugees…

State governors do not have the authority to reject refugees. That power rests with the federal government.  (jj)
