A taskforce chaired by the republican prosecutor of Hamilton County, Joe Deters, says that Ohio would create 35,000 new jobs if the state were to legalize marijuana. The Marijuana Policies of Ohio Taskforce was created in part by ResponsibleOhio, a group working to put a pro-legalization issue in front of voters. Deters says that the group had no voice in the findings of his group. Among other things noted by the taskforce:
- Studies show that the number of marijuana arrests has declined significantly in states that have legalized or decriminalized marijuana possession.
- Marijuana is often perceived as being safer than other types of licit or illicit drugs. In broad terms, research indicates that this is true.
- Little, if any, evidence supports the hypothesis of marijuana being a “gateway drug” but significant studies refute it.
- Marijuana prohibition laws in the United States and Ohio are intended to curtail marijuana use, yet research clearly demonstrates that they are both extremely expensive and ineffective.
- Illegal distribution of marijuana is likely to continue even if the drug is legalized.
