Update: Ohio House passes bill to defund Planned Parenthood

Update: The Ohio House passed a bill on Tuesday to defund Planned Parenthood. The 62 – 33 vote would pull $1.3 million worth of federal grants from the organization. (Though the money is from the federal government, it is the state’s role to decide how it is dispensed.)

The Ohio Senate passed a similar bill last month. Governor Kasich has voiced support for such a plan.  (jj)

When the Ohio House meets today, they will likely consider a bill to defund Planned Parenthood. The bill would strip the women’s health services provider of $1.3 million worth of federal grant money. The proposal is co-sponsored by Rep. Margaret Conditt (R) and Rep. Bill Patmon (D). The Ohio Senate passed a similar measure in October.

Planned Parenthood says that if lawmakers are successful in pulling the grant money, they will continue their work and not turn away patients.  (jj)
