Deputy-involved crash leaves one dead

614now Staff

A Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy in pursuit of a suspected drunk driver was involved in an accident this morning that left one person dead. On the city’s West side, a motorist almost struck a patrol car and then drove away. Deputies identified that person as a potential DUI suspect and followed. At that time, another deputy was on the way to the scene (with lights and sirens according to a department spokesperson). According to reports, a van pulled out of a parking lot near the intersection of Sullivant and Demorest and into the path of the oncoming deputy. The van was struck and its driver ejected. (That person was pronounced dead at the scene.) The deputy’s vehicle burst into flames, but he was able to escape with only minor injuries.

Other deputies caught up with the suspected drunk driver and, after tasing the individual, took that person into custody.  (jj)
