Refusing to take a hike: gay scout leader wants reinstated
In 2014, a change in policy from the Boy Scouts of America allowed membership for openly gay scouts. Openly gay adults however continue to be a no-go as far as the group is concerned. Westerville’s Brian Peffly is 35 years-old, an Eagle Scout…and has been excommunicated from his position as a leader in the organization. Brian acknowledged his homosexuality in a TV interview earlier this year and, soon after, learned that he was not only out of the closet, he was out of the scouts.
His case isn’t the first involving an openly gay man being told to take a hike by the boy scouts, but it does seems to be the case that has garnered the most attention. This week, a campaign has been launched to pressure the organization to change their policy and let gay leaders like Brian back into the group. The Human Rights Campaign, ACLU of Ohio, Scouts for Equality and Equality Ohio are working together in the fight. A website has been set-up for people to show their support for Peffly: www.standwithbrian.org (jj)
