Ginther: Police body cameras are coming next year

policenowIn May, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman announced that the city was considering requiring police to wear body cameras. In part, the mayor said that camera use would add to the level of transparency of CPD operations. Since then, State Representative Kevin Boyce has said that he will introduce a bill in the legislature requiring that all police wear body cameras. But now the city has decided that it cannot wait on the state to act.

Columbus City Council President (and mayoral candidate) Andrew Ginther says that Columbus Police will begin wearing body cameras in 2016. A committee will soon be assembled that will examine how to properly implement their use.

At the time of Mayor Coleman’s remarks in May, one of the concerns involved cost. It was estimated that it may cost as much as $6 million to pay for server space to hold all of the camera video. So that funding will need to be approved…as will money for the camera themselves. (jj)
