Today marks 70 years since the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan immediately killing 80,000 people. Tens of thousands more would die in the weeks and months that followed. Many more have died from radiation-related cancers in the years since. Not long after the Hiroshima bombing, the Nagasaki bombing that followed, and the Soviet Union’s declaration of war on Japan, the island nation surrendered to the Allies, effectively bringing World War 2 to a close.
A peace vigil will be held at Goodale Park tonight to remember the lives lost. The event will begin at 7:30pm at the gazebo on the northeast side of the park. (jj)
