Sheriff Zach Scott says that deputies mistakenly released a prisoner who was serving time in the Franklin County jail.
The incident happened in July and involved Quanetta James, a women serving a 2-year sentence for identity fraud. In July, deputies released James…well before her sentence was up. Corrections personnel realized the error and the freshly freed prisoner was recently re-arrested.
Scott says that there is no flaw in the jail’s policy and that there was no criminal wrongdoing in regards to the release. Still, he disciplined three deputies and two civilian workers in regards to the matter. The civilians were in training at the time that James was set prematurely set free.
Sheriff Scott, a candidate for mayor of Columbus, says that the jail system is outdate and that there are plans to replace it with a computerized operation. (jj)
