ResponsibleOhio loses grip on Twitter handle

ronowLeaders from ResponsibleOhio are not likely to be favoriting anything coming from the group’s former Twitter handle anytime soon.

The group is currently promoting its proposed state constitution amendment to legalize medicinal and personal use of marijuana and establish a select number of pre-determined grow-farms. On November ballots, the initiative will be listed as State Issue 3. In keeping with that, in the last few days, ResponsibleOhio changed their account handle on Twitter from @ResponsibleOH to @Yeson3Ohio. The group successfully made the change and kept hold of all of the people that had followed them on the social media site up to that point.

What they failed to do was to secure the old handle (@ResponsibleOH). Opponents of the pro-pot measure scooped up the discarded name and have been running with it ever since. They’ve taken to posting messages encouraging people to vote no on issue 3. And they seem to be having fun with it. Some of the messages target ResponsibleOhio’s recently launched ‘Buddie’ campaign. Buddie is the group’s new mascot, traveling the state and visiting college campuses encouraging people to vote to approve the amendment. ResponsibleOhio has said that Buddie is not for children (despite his similarities to mascots that you might see at family theme parks).

A spokesperson for the real ResponsibleOhio says that they have filed a complaint with Twitter asking that the account be disabled. They are calling the group controlling the account “trolls” and say their use of the account violates Twitter’s guidelines for parody use.  (jj)
