It was judgement day on Tuesday for the driver of the ethanol tanker driver that crashed and caught fire on the city’s Westside last month causing serious structural damage to a freeway overpass. Charles Lackings was working for HOC Transport at the time of the accident that caused the closure of the eastbound I-70 bridge at I-270. (A temporary lane was constructed to allow traffic to navigate the area while the bridge was being repaired.)
Lackings was fined $500 after pleading guilty to a charge of transporting hazardous materials within city limits. He also must pay $143 in court costs and will be on probation for one year. A probation violation would net Lackings six months in jail.
Repair costs for the bridge were approximately $1.2 million. The city plans to seek reimbursement from the trucking company for that cost.
HOC Transport fired Lackings after the crash. (jj)
