Timberrrrr! – Ikea’s plan to cut 600 trees
There was a lot of excitement with the announcement earlier this year that Ikea would be putting a store in the Central Ohio area. Now we have word that the development could mean doom for hundreds of trees.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that Ikea has asked the city for permission to remove nearly 600 trees from the store’s planned location at Polaris. They say that the trees would essentially hide their store from traffic on I-71. In exchange for cutting down the trees from the designated “stream corridor protection zone,” Ikea has offered to plant 250 new trees elsewhere on their site and an additional 1,000+ trees elsewhere in the corridor…or somewhere else entirely…whichever the city would prefer.
The city has granted conditional approval of the plan.
Ikea plans to open their Polaris store in 2017. (jj)
