Video: Baby polar bear at the Columbus Zoo

Congratulations to Aurora the Polar Bear. The Columbus Zoo resident is presently spending some quality time with her newborn cub.

The zoo says that Aurora gave birth to two cubs last Friday. One sadly did not survive. (Experts say that polar bears have one the lowest successful reproductive rates among mammals. Odds of survival in the first weeks is only fifty percent.)

Zookeepers are monitoring Aurora and the surviving cub in a private area outside of public view. They say that mother and child appear to be doing fine.

Aurora and her twin sister Anana are 8-year-old polar bears and each has mated with 28-year-old Nanuq. The Columbus Zoo has reason to believe that Anana may be pregnant right now.  (jj)
