NBC4 reports that the family of a homeless woman who died while in the custody of the Franklin County Jail has filed a lawsuit against the jail and Sheriff Zach Scott.
The incident is from earlier this year when 55 year-old Mary McCoy was picked up on an open container warrant.
According to the lawsuit:
- McCoy was processed at the jail at approximately 7:15am on April 6th. She appeared disoriented, confused and ill. Her vital signs and blood pressure went unchecked. She was simply locked up.
- At 2:30pm, McCoy suffered a head injury when deputies picked her up from the floor of her cell. She was then placed in a holding cell. Fellow inmates told jailers that McCoy needed help. No medical treatment was given.
- McCoy was found dead at 4:30am on April 7th.
The Franklin County Jail says that they conducted an investigation of the incident and found no wrongdoing…that McCoy died of natural causes. (jj)
