WexMed improves treatment intiatives for rape survivors

The Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center is looking at improving its methods for treating rape survivors at their main hospital. In the past, hospital leaders routinely considered transfers from University Hospital to University Hospital East. That’s because University East houses a team of specially trained sexual-assault nurses, and it sees about the twice the volume of cases (82 to the main hospital’s 40 in 2014).

But after drawing criticism from advocacy groups, the hospital is looking at improving and adding more support at the main hospital. The plan includes new (ongoing) training and equipment, and will also look at recruiting more nurses. Jason Walsh, director of nursing for emergency services, said the ultimate goal is for both hospitals to be “mirror images.” of each other.
